Ausangate Walk of the llama

Ausangate is one of the spiritual routes, magical and religious because of the presence of the mountain range of Vilcanota in which is imposed the highest snow-capped mountain of Cusco, APU AUSANGATE (6372 msnm), the protector guide of the Peruvian Andinos. During this journey, we will encounter llamas, alpacas, vicuñas, as well as people who will show us their works of art.

DAY 1: CUSCO – TINKI — UPIS.

We will leave Cusco at 6:30 am in private transport, travelling for two and a half hours until the village of Tinki, (3850msnm) where we will have our lunch after our visit. From here we begin our trek until our first campsite. While we are walking, we will begin to appreciate the magnificent Ausangate, as well as a group of lakes, and llamas and alpacas. When we reach the thermal baths of Upis (4450 msnm), we will camp and can bath. This day the hiking will be a relaxing 4 hours.

MEALS: Lunch, Dinner.

DAY 2: UPIS — AUSANGATE COCHA.

On this second day, we continue to ascend until the first pass, Arapa (4750 msnm), from where we descend to a group of 5 beautiful lakes (4450 msnm). At this place, we will take our lunch, always appreciating the impressive snow-capped mountain. After a rest, we continue climbing to another small pass; from here we can see in the distance the second tallest mountain of Cusco, Salcantay. We then descend to our campsite, Ausangatecocha (4650 msnm).

DAY 3: AUSANGATECOCHA – JAMPA

This day may be the most difficult because we must climb for 2 hours to the highest point of our trek, the pass of Palomani, (5200msnm) where we can appreciate very close the mountain. The view here is very impressive, with the mountain range in this place we feel very close to the sky. Later, we descend to a beautiful valley, surrounded by llamas, alpacas and vicuñas until we reach Huchuy Finaya (4500msnm).

After a well deserved rest, we continue climbing for 2 hours more to our campsite, Jampa (4650msnm).

MEALS: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

DAY 4: JAMPA – PACCHANTA.

On this day, we continue climbing for abut 3 hours to the pass Jampa (5000msnm), the second highest in the area. From here, we descend for an hour to another group of lakes, where we will have our lunch, always appreciating the wild birds such as geese, ducks, and gulls, as well as eagles and hawks. Later, we continue to our campsite where we can again visit thermal baths at Pacchanata (4400msnm), with a view of the glaciers. Very impressive.

DAY 5: PACCHANTA – TINKI – CUSCO

After breakfast this morning, we being our return hike to the village of Tinki. Our walk is about 3 hours and we must climb a little and then descend until the village where we will have our lunch. After lunch, we take our return car to Cusco, and back to your hotel. End of our services.

IMPORTANT NOTES

The time of hiking will depend on the group. The guide can change the places for having lunch and camping according to the physical condition of the group.
Each guide has his own way of leading his groups but always his decisions will be for the benefit of the tourists.
AUSANGATE. This is an adventure tour that we must enjoy, to the maximum with good weather or, if not, always we must have an open mind, a positive attitude and a good sense of humor.

WHAT TO BRING FOR YOUR TREK

  • 1 small nylon reinforced backpack to carry the things you need for the trek (camera, drinks, etc.)
  • 1 large backpack or suitcase to keep the things you don‘t need in your hotel in Cusco until you return from your trek
  • Sleeping bag good for -5°C (which can be rented in Cusco)
  • Small flashlight and extra batteries
  • 1 water bottle (1 liter) or a small plastic throw away bottle
  • Hiking boots
  • Tennis shoes
  • 1 jacket (of nylon with hood and water and wind resistant)
  • 1 Fleece Jacket
  • 1 pair of gloves and hat of wool (they can be bought during your trip).
  • 3 or 4 short sleeved shirts (preferably “dryfit” that don’t retain water).
  • 2 pairs of shorts such as bermudas.
  • Medias: 4 pairs of wool and 4 of fiber (coolmax) for the trek (avoid cotton as these can retain water)
  • 1 sun hat and sunglasses
  • Personal medications and toiletries in small containers
  • Sunscreen for your skin and lips
  • Insect repellant
  • Moisturizer lotion to avoid the drying out of the skin
  • Bathing suit for the thermal baths in Aguas Calientes

OPTIONAL

  • Heated sleeping mat
  • Sleeping bags which can be rented in the office for $5 per day and good for – 10°C.
  • Professional walking sticks can be rented in the office for $2 per day
  • Energy foods: chocolates, granola bars, dried fruits, etc. (they can be purchased in Cusco.
